Since 2003, the Insurance Board of Canada has produced an annual top 10 stolen vehicles in Canada list. IBC also reports on the top 10 stolen vehicles and trends in organized auto theft for specific regions in Canada.
The statistics IBC publishes are based on actual insurance claim data, collected from most automobile insurance companies in Canada. These companies write most of the automobile insurance in the country. IBC represents more than 90% of the non-government home, vehicle and business insurance companies across Canada. It is highly regarded as a provider of automobile insurance rating information.
"For the second consecutive year, auto theft across Canada and Ontario has increased," said Kim Donaldson, Vice-President, Ontario, IBC. "After large declines in auto theft activity over the last decade, the number of stolen vehicles has gone up 6% nationally, compared to last year. In Ontario, the number has increased by 5%. Many of the high-end vehicles that are stolen in Ontario will end up in overseas markets."
According to the IBC, automobile theft costs Canadians close to $1 billion, including $542 million for insurers to fix or replace stolen vehicles, $250 million in police, health care and court system costs and millions more for correctional services. (Source: IBC)
